Entrepreneurs guilt, balancing “Discipline” VS “Freedom” 🤔… And why I no longer set an alarm in the morning!...

One of the biggest causes of stress for business owners I see is GUILT. Guilt that comes from comparing yourself, your habits, your routine and of course your results to other business owners (well mostly your perception of other business owners from what you can see on the ‘gram!).

For the longest time I gave myself such a hard time about what time I would get up in the morning. One of my mentors was telling me that 4am was admirable and I could see other entrepreneurs talking about the 5am club and 6am club. One of my proudest achievements is that I managed to get up at 6am for 30 days straight. Of course it didn’t stick. 6am soon became 7, which soon became half 8.

In my journey as an entrepreneur, I have managed to evolve most things about myself - my confidence, my relationship with money, my abilities as a coach etc. BUT the time I got out of bed was just something I really struggled to conquer. Even when I addressed the root cause of my desire to snooze the alarm and go back to sleep i.e. severe overwhelm to do with unrealistic goals and fear of failure, the bad habit of snoozing and rolling over was just so deeply ingrained I struggled to change it.

It’s funny because 99% of us start businesses to gain more freedom and flexibility in our lives, but the reality is, is that it also requires high levels of discipline and structure. So where is the balance? And how do we find it?

To be honest, I didn’t have full clarity on this until about 3 months ago when I started interviewing successful multi-6 figure and 7 figure entrepreneurs for my new podcast Millionaire Secrets (release date coming soon!) and I had a big epiphany. Business success is not linked to the time you get up, but what you do with the time you are awake (I realised this when I spoke to two 7-figure earners - one of which gets up whenever he wants between 7 and 10am, whilst the other one woke up at 4:45am).

Ultimately, the discipline and structure is a productivity tool, helping you complete the necessary tasks that accomplish what you need to accomplish in a pocket of time. But that doesn’t mean you lose your freedom and flexibility. Arguably it helps you keep it. Because the quicker you get done what you need to get done, the more time you have to be free and play.

When I realised this, the meaning of getting up changed for me. Now getting up early doesn’t mean more time to be disciplined, it actually means more time to be free. I also realised a lot of my bad habits were attached to the alarm itself (you can’t snooze when there is no alarm set after all!) So I stopped setting an alarm and now I get up earlier than I did when I set an alarm. And even on the mornings where my body needs more rest than normal, I don’t feel guilty AT ALL! Because now I attach the discipline to the thing that makes me more productive - looking after myself and because of this I feel like the free entrepreneur I want to be!

Does anybody else suffer from entrepreneurs guilt and what’s the context for you? I'd love to hear your take on this in the comments below!
